From a coffee plantation on
the Karen von Blixen estate, famous from the award winning movie "Out
of Africa", at the foot of the Ngon'g Hills
these beads are created with clay from Mt Kenya.
The late Lady Susan Wood founded
Kazuri in 1975. Observing that many
women in the villages around Nairobi were struggling single mothers, she and two
Kikuyu women organized a ceramic workshop to teach them jewelry making
skills.
Kazuri, the Swahili word for 'small
and beautiful' are created by hand by one of over 200 local women.
The beads are then kiln fired once, glazed and fired again. Kazuri’s goal is to provide employment
opportunities for disadvantaged members of Kenyan Society. Kazuri is
a member of the Fair Trade Act.
Selection of Kazuri beads
offered by Beads & More is unique to the Eastern United States.
Many new designs are now available:
elephants, giraffes, pendants,
and
a new black and white bead named after Lady Susan Wood,
and many more!
